Tips for Decorating a Small Space

I live in a 420 square foot studio apartment. It's the perfect size for me, and I love my small space. However, decorating and designing a small space can be difficult, especially if you're a) renting, b) on a budget, c) just moved into your first place...ever, or d) all of the above. Here are some of my tips and tricks for decorating a small space.

+ Rely on your whites and brights!
A small apartment can easily seem more cramped if decorated in dark tones and with dark woods. White furnishings and lighter colors, such as light grays, blush pinks and whites help reflect incoming light and give the illusion of a larger space.

+ Choose a color scheme.
Going off of the first tip, you should choose a color scheme for your apartment. Especially if you live in a studio like me, your living space is just one big room, so you need to make sure your décor is cohesive. You want your space to flow nicely and not have things clash. I chose to decorate in grays, ivories, and whites, with the occasional pop of black.

+ Maximize storage and space.
This is a must, especially if you live in a studio. My space is divided by one of these big IKEA cubey things, and it functions perfectly as a divider between my bed and the rest of my living space. Also, the cubes provide storage, and the cubbies themselves provide display space if you remove the cubes.

+ Cut down on clutter.
Though it can be tempting to buy as many cute, decorative things that you don't need as can fit in your Target cart, shoving a bunch of items into a small space does not look as cute. Keep your decorations fun and reflective of your personal style but minimal so your apartment doesn't seem cramped. Cutting down on clutter also keeps dust from accumulating as quickly as it would otherwise and makes cleaning easier.
